There are two sides to all winning streaks in sports. One is the opportunity for that streak to blossom into something special and the other is the inevitability that at some point, that streak is going to end.
After 144 consecutive district matches won over a span of nearly 18 years, the Plano West tennis team now knows the finality of its prolific winning streak.
It took nearly seven hours of tennis staged at multiple venues in the Plano area, but at last concluded around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with a 10-9 victory for Allen, handing West its first district loss since 1999.
"It's a really special feeling for us and our program," said Justin Quest, Allen head coach. "Everybody really stepped up and that's what I really like about this team this year. We're finding wins from multiple people in our lineup.
"... We have so much respect for what [West head coach Morgen Walker] has built and the success they've been able to sustain. That's no accident."
